The CSUF Aging Studies Academic Program is also working on AFU, so this is incredibly helpful, thank you!

48:36
Maria.Claver@csulb.edu

48:43
Same here, at SFSU - we are just about to start the very beginning stage!

50:04
With more distance learning due to Covid, do you think this is a good opportunity to reach out to more older adults to participate in classes on campus since they can take them from home? Is that something AFU looks at (online learning?)

51:13
The GSA symposium about AFU is on Nov 4 at 10:45 am

51:19
We have something like the OLLI trolley at CSUF, where older adults are transported around campus on a set schedule from parking lots to classrooms. Would that be something OLLI has at CSULB as well?

54:36
you might want to partner with your disability office. they do the walk arounds

55:10
@ Janette - YES! We have a good relationship with our Disability Office. I will absolutely include them.

56:09
Jackcumming@ActionAging.com

56:39
@Jack THANK YOU! I will be in touch.

57:02
Janette, that is a great point. I worked on a photovoice project in the community with older adults and we found things that may go beyond disability that concerned our participants such as feelings of safety, access to restrooms, printed maps (not just on phone), and shaded areas to sit. Correct me if disability does look at this stuff, but these were things we found in our project that surprised us and went beyond the usual idea of looking at stairs/ramps.

57:03
UCLA is blessed to have Gary Small

01:00:11
@Caitlin OLLI TROLLEY! I love that!!

01:00:32
@Jack I agree. He is such an advocate for older adults.

01:01:30
@Maria, it's amazing! They are so sweet!

01:06:02
Awesome job Age Friendly Team! I find this topic very interesting!

01:06:30
A California group would be excellent - Sac State is starting the assessment process.

01:07:00
All the GSA AFU resources are available for us to use and that will save us a great deal of work

01:07:31
CMS has innovative grants that may be available to help us create and develop a new dynamic that can be far reaching

01:08:27
Great ideas Laurinda & Lisa

01:08:34
@Lisa thank you for that information!

01:10:57
Ayesha, thank you for your questions! We also reached out to the Academic senates, the Diversity and equity campus committee's as well as Student senators to keep the momentum of the age friendly univ movement! Getting the campus community involved at every level, has helped us raise awareness very quickly.

01:14:35
My apologies for having to step out numerous times; my young son is home learning and needing my help.

01:15:18
Quite alright!

01:16:30
Me :( But it is possible my hearing impairments are genetics

01:18:34
GREAT point, Alex! My 93 year old grandmother has just started accepting needing ANY type of device (hearing aid, walker, etc.) How we address the stigma?

01:29:43
So Does CSULB have an audiology department that actually works with people on these issues?

01:29:52
I was really struck by the comment that others might think that people with hearing challenges are rude but actually, they just didn't hear the greeting! I want to include that in my discussions with students about hearing loss among older adults.

01:30:14
I thought my mom didn’t really like me until my sister told me she was pretty deaf. If she couldn’t see my lips...she couldn’t hear me.

01:30:43
@Suzanne. That is so sad!

01:31:13
Maria—right, it was a real eye opener. But she just never wanted a hearing aid.

01:32:03
Thank you

01:32:57
That was so interesting

01:33:05
@Suzanne - Yes. We have to help people accept the wonderful technology that exists! I love Donna's story that her family's sharing how her hearing loss affects them. I'm going to share that with my mom (my 93-year-old grandmother lives with them).

01:33:26
Thank you, this was interesting!

01:35:20
Here is CSULB's web page on Age Friendly University including Dr. Maria Claver's contact information. https://www.csulb.edu/college-of-health-human-services/gerontology/csulb-age-friendly-university

01:35:57
@ Ed - This may or may not be the topic you cover, but I have a student whose work is to help deaf older adults. If you know any good literature on needs and services for deaf older adults, let me know! She is having a hard time finding articles. etakagi@sfsu.edu

01:40:43
I was not aware of this before, super helpful! Thank you!

01:46:42
The mix of presentations is a great reminder of the interplay between gerontology and geriatrics

01:49:11
Kelly, you're right about the overlap. Our society has become excessively siloed to the detriment of advancing our culture to take full advantage of the low cost global connectivity that the technologists have gifted to us.

01:50:41
Absolutely agree Jack!

01:51:27
I'm sorry did you say how FM is treated? Or is that often chaotic due to people having comorbidities and multiple medications?

01:53:14
:D

01:54:20
Thank you! Super helpful!

01:54:42
Thank you. :)

01:54:46

01:57:56
So what you're saying is that we need to provide green spaces for individuals with FM...

I want to hang out in that room!

02:00:27
I want to be there now :-)

02:01:36
There’s some really interesting research on grounding/earthing…I wonder if there’s something there for this population

02:02:11
May I just say that the reason my house currently has an indoor garden is because of this presentation? Great job Miriam!

02:04:40
I love it!

02:06:44
interesting research on green spaces reducing stress, anxiety, and depression in middle aged and older adults immediately and over time

02:06:47
@Miriam Gamboa the founder of Silverado is Loren Shookas founder, president, chairman and CEO of Silverado, Loren Shook is often recognized as a memory care futurist.

02:07:01
Thank you Adriana :)

02:09:00
I am moved by this idea! As a former Activities Assistant in a Senior Living Community, music and nature were always the top successful activities with older adults with memory impairments. The smiles that would light up their faces made my day! :)

02:09:53
That is SO COOL!

02:09:56
Here is an interesting video on grounding…documentary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=44ddtR0XDVU&app=desktop

02:10:10
Just an FYI Amazon prime has many nature videos including forest bathing. Just incase you're interested in an alternate form of programming.

02:10:50
That is so interesting, thank you! Miriam is always looking for more resources on this topic, so this is amazing!

02:15:26
Mary.marshall@csulb.edu (Making the Move: Older Adult’s Decisions about moving to Assisted Living

02:18:06
Today the move is based on need because of the caregiver image that the industry has promoted for itself. It would be far better both for society and for the providers if they migrated to an empowerment model for their selling. I have lived in an RCFE for 14 years.

02:21:57
really interesting that cost wasn't that important.. in my work at an adult center, cost is probably the 2nd or 3rd thing on caregivers minds

02:23:05
good point Jack

02:24:22
I recently learned about another housing model called "cohousing." Alexandria Levitt wrote a book about this called "State of the Art Cohousing: Lessons Learned from Quimper Village." levittcoho.com

02:26:18
I edited a book on Creative Neighborhoods for Older Adults that fits into this discussion. It was based on research we did with students in an architecture program.

02:26:30
Thank you Lucinda. We have been arguing this point with SNF's also taking the word Facility out!!
